Pop quiz, hot shot! Building an online platform feels:
D. Harder than people say it should be.
If you answered C, here’s a high five! Now get on out of here. Shoo!
Actually, please don’t leave! I love platform-building too! BUT THAT WASN’T ALWAYS THE CASE. I used to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and frustrated.
It seemed like there was some magic secret everyone knew but me.
I struggled to build a platform in a way that didn’t feel icky. I hated the idea that I HAD to build one at all. Publishers say they would like to see 10,000 people on your email list for non-fiction queries. (Listen to this interview with a publishing insider to hear for yourself!) I just wanted to write great things and have people read them.
10,000 people still sounds so insane to me. I remember how hard I worked to get the first hundred people on my list.
I know what you’re thinking, because I thought it, too:
Isn’t writing a great blog good enough? (No.)
Isn’t writing great books good enough? (No.)
Isn’t content king? (Yes. But not if no one finds or reads your content.)
We are in the days where platform-building is accessible because of all the free social media tools like Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest. That’s the upside. The downside is that it means you are expected to build your own platform. People talk like it’s easy. But so many people get weighed down by this idea and give up after a few attempts.
First I want to help you do is reframe the idea of platform. At its simplest, building a platform is using free tools to connect with your ideal readers. Everyone can agree: THAT SOUNDS AWESOME!
The moment I started thinking in that way is the moment I really started growing my list, my page views, and my opportunities. People began seeking me out for help with their platform and I found that I was able to help them grow their reach and their understanding of how they should be spending their time to accomplish their goals. I LOVE what I do.
So how about we work together?
I am a huge proponent of free content, and so I offer a LOT of it. You can read the blog, listen to the podcast, take the Free Email course, or join me for free monthly trainings 1-2 times a month. I also send out weekly emails with curated links relevant to writing, blogging, and social media.
Free can take you a long way, but there comes a time where investing will speed things up for you and take you farther than you can get bootstrapping. When I started taking myself more seriously, I invested in courses, tools (like Leadpages), and a bigger, better email service provider (my new favorite tool, ConvertKit).
Spending money provides the necessary tools faster. It takes your knowledge deeper and makes all the wheels turn more smoothly. My philosophy is to use ALL the free resources you can, but know when you need to make wise investments.
If you know it’s time to really INVEST in yourself (you’re so worth it!), we can take our relationship one step further.
I’ll tell you all the secrets (like, for example: there ARE no secrets) and help you reframe platform building into something that sounds awesome. Because what it really boils down to is building bridges with your readers and super fans. That sounds wayyyyyyyyy more fun, right? Let’s get started.
[su_spoiler title=”Own Your List $197 (click to expand)” style=”simple” icon=”chevron-circle”]
This is my flagship course. It’s my baby. I believe your email list is the backbone of your online presence. There are many courses out there about list growth, but this course is comprehensive. When you are finished, you won’t just HAVE an email list. You will OWN your list, top to bottom.
- You will create an email strategy to know WHY you are sending emails.
- You will know what content works best for your audience.
- You will know how and when to use autoresponders & drip campaigns or create automated online courses through email.
- You will know how to manage subscribers and customize forms.
- You’ll learn to create freebies and content upgrades.
- AND (this is the biggie for many people), you will learn different ways to make money from your list or make your list pay for itself.
Before you pour money and time into your blog and pageviews, you need to own your list so you can capture traffic and make relationships with your readers that are LASTING. Seriously, if there is one thing I wish I learned earlier, THIS is the thing. FIND OUT MORE.

Who am I to help YOU?
I’m a writer and blogger with an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where I taught composition and also helped edit the Spring 2007 edition of The Greensboro Review. I have a handful of self-published books (and four kids who keep me from writing as much as I would like). I have been blogging for almost eight years, but only seriously for two. Last year I grew the pageviews on my personal blog by 80% from January to December.
I made the top 25 list of Houston Social Media Power Influencers in 2016. I have spoken at Houston Social Media Breakfast about honing your voice for social media, Blog Elevated about building your email list, Houston Social Media Day about branding your voice, AdventureCon on writing a perfect blog post, and wrote a course for Collective Bias on keeping your voice and brand consistent online. In Fall of 2016 I will be speaking at BlogHer Food and Blog Elevated.
Through the Create If Writing podcast, I interview experts like Darren Rowse from Problogger, freelancer extraordinaire Paul Jarvis, email masters like Amy Lynn Andrews, publishers like Chad R. Allen, and blogging entrepreneurs like Holly Homer. I have also been featured on the Smarty Pants Podcast and have helped with content for the Sell More Books Show.
With one foot in the world of writing and publishing and another foot in the blogging world, I am uniquely positioned to help writers or bloggers develop that all important keyword: PLATFORM.
