Niche It Down a Notch

February 7, 2019 by kirstenoliphant@gmail.com 10 Comments

This content comes from a talk I did for a local chapter of the Romance Writers of America and is all about niching down to be profitable. My show notes will be sparse, because I’ve got a lovely podcast episode and slides that you can use to follow along!

When you are able to niche down with your writing, you will be able to increase your productivity and your profits.

  • Your productivity will increase because niching down gives you a clear framework of reader and genre expectations.
  • Your profits will increase because you are satisfying the reader expectations. When you satisfy those expectations, readers trust you and they come back for more books. It builds superfans!

So…how do you niche down? Listen to this episode and scroll through the slideshow to see how I niched down to go from making $30 in January 2018 to making $8.5k in January 2019. That’s one year and a crazy increase in profits. I can’t even math that high!

***In the slideshow and podcast, I used the reporting for income that happened before Amazon announced the pageread payout for the month of January. Because the payout went down, so did my income. Still impressive! But if you’re wondering why it was $9k in the slides and audio, that’s why!

While some might think that niching down or writing to market stifles creativity, for me, it’s increased it. I love the challenge of finding my way and writing my voice within genre constraints and reader expectations.

Have you tried niching down?

Hi Kirsten, an excellent episode, thank you!

I’m an indie author and getting amazing value from these writing-related episodes.

I heard you talking about BookBub ads this week … I’m just about to get my 4th BookBub at the end of February, I was terrified the first time I paid the fee.

However, a BookBub ad on a series is worth £5k-£6k (around $7k) in income in a month, plus you get a long tail of sales two months afterwards.

I write in trilogies, so I give away book 1 in the promo and make my money off book 2, book 3, book 2&3 bundled and the box-set.

I’m in psychological fiction and sci-fi/dystopia, I made less in sci-fi but still made more than 5 times my money back.

I’d encourage you to give it a try, particularly as you have a series with strong read-through – it feels like you’re living life on the edge when you pay that big bill for the first time 🙂

Congratulations on your writing success, I’m hanging onto your every word in the episodes, you’re sharing some great tips!

    Best wishes, Paul

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve heard very mixed results from the people writing in my genre. It MAY have an impact that most romance series are connected standalone series. I have good read-through, but the impulse isn’t as strong, because there is no cliffhanger. It’s just a little different beast. I’ve heard from multiple authors in my genre who didn’t see the results this year from BookBub, though they have before. So I’m quite hesitant to try it, though I’ll keep listening to how it’s working for others! I might be more willing to try it with another genre. 🙂

    Hello Kirsten,

The podcast was great. Really good information, but I can’t get to show notes. I’ve tried adding 150 to the back of the domain name and it’s not working.

    Thanks,

    Rhonda
